Inspired by the heart rending experience of Lady Dr. S P C Kotelawala - Deputy Chairperson Ceylinco Group who visited an abattoir and witnessed the sad plight of cows and their calves taken for slaughter, the Ceylinco Sarana Cattle Protection Centre is hailed as one of the most humane initiatives in our country. She was not only greatly moved by what she saw, but also moved into action, buying over the cows at the slaughter house immediately and giving them a safe haven. Thus began the quest of saving pregnant, ageing and milking cows from the cruel hands of starvation and eventual death and giving them a 'retirement home' where they can enjoy a life free of torture.

The Ceylinco Sarana Cattle Protection Centre is a fully fledged company under the Ceylinco Group and will employ a staff fully dedicated to this cause. It will intervene and buy over milking cows that are being given up for sale or slaughter at the end of their milking period, transport them to a transit shelter in Meegoda and eventually to a large tract of land in Tangalle where the beasts will roam free. Plans have also been drawn up to set up a facility in the sanctuary to produce pasteurized milk from these cows and manufacture manure from their waste, which will be marketed at a premium price. A Bio-Gas Plant is also in the pipeline to utilize every possible resource without them being wasted. These innovations not only provide employment opportunities to people in the area but also enable this venture to sustain its functions in the long run.

Ceylinco is planning to take this crusade globally through its Fast Cash network in the Middle East and eventually to Australia, England, America, Japan and Canada with the ultimate goal of ensuring that not a single cow will meet with a cruel fate.
