The start of this particular programme has its beginnings in the charity that was practised by Deshamanya Dr. Lalith Kotelawala every Sunday after Mass outside the Church where he attended services.  He used to give the beggars gathered near the Church gate around Rs. 50/- each and every Sunday.  As news of his philanthropy spread, the amount of beggars rapidly increased.  Since the crowd was getting to be quite unwieldy, the Sunday Beneficiaries programme was shifted to The Finance House Colombo 04.

The practice of the Sunday Beneficiaries program continues to date.  Every Sunday not only are the unfortunates given a cash donation, essentials such as milk foods is also distributed.  On a case by case basis, persons with special needs are also attended to every Sunday.  Currently around 800 persons are helped weekly.

Every week a medical camp is conducted for the participants in the Sunday Beneficiaries program.  A minimum of 3 doctors/nurses are there to attend to the needs.  Free consultation and drugs are given.
